A 1.5mm genuine stone changes a wall the same way grazing light changes a volume: the material returns, and the eye returns with it. Here's when to choose it, how to specify it, and how to avoid three common mistakes.
Why genuine stone, not a printed imitation
A printed imitation works as long as no one gets too close. At two meters, a good realistic photo passes. At fifty centimeters, the light betrays it: no depth, no relief, no variation between two pieces. Genuine stone does the opposite: from afar it appears uniform, up close it reveals itself. This is what architects call the second reading. No print can reproduce it.
The technique that makes this accessible today is called stone veneer. A sheet of natural stone is cleaved to about 1.5mm thick, then stabilized on a fiberglass backing. The panel retains the true material but becomes flexible, lightweight, and applicable to almost any surface — including curved ones.
Three formats, three uses
At Cambois, genuine stone comes in three formats. The choice is not cosmetic: it depends on the wall, the area, and what is expected acoustically.
1. The Classic veneer — for large continuous surfaces
This is the format to choose when you want a continuous reading on large surfaces: entrance wall, bathroom wall, dressed bar counter, recessed niche. Available in formats up to 2800 × 1200mm, it is installed with full surface adhesive. For large formats, the photo-matching option guarantees that the delivered sheet exactly matches the image you saw: same vein, same dominant color. It is the thinnest version — 1.5mm — and the most versatile.
2. The design panel — for visible walls in damp areas
Genuine stone, but this time on a water-repellent MDF backing and impregnated to resist humidity and stains. This is the format for bathrooms, kitchens, wellness areas — anywhere where the material must withstand water, steam, and splashes without deteriorating.
3. The acoustic panel — when image and sound matter equally
Same genuine stone, mounted on an acoustic felt made from recycled plastic. The panel absorbs sound and dresses the wall. Can be screwed directly to the wall or ceiling, without adhesive. For open-plan offices, restaurants, reception areas, studios — anywhere you need to break reverberation without sacrificing material reading.
How to choose, in practice
Four questions decide most projects:
- Does the wall get wet? If so, design panel or Classic on suitable backing. No acoustics in prolonged direct contact.
- Does the volume echo? If reverberation is a known problem (open-plan office, restaurant, hall), use acoustic panels on 30 to 60% of the wall.
- What is the continuous surface to be covered? Beyond 8m², consider photo-matching to ensure vein continuity.
- What light illuminates the wall? Natural lateral light: light decors with visible structure (Silvia, Rainforest Green) show up beautifully. Neutral LED overhead lighting: dark and stable decors (Red Creek, Rustique) maintain a better reading.
Three mistakes to avoid
Choosing from a screen. Calibrations vary, screens saturate, genuine stone has a depth that screens smooth out. Always order a physical sample. Place it on the wall, watch it throughout the day.
Under-ordering in critical areas. For a large format, allow 5 to 10% for cuts and trials. Genuine stone is not an imitation that can be reproduced identically on demand: each batch has its own signature.
Adhering without preparing the surface. Full surface adhesive installation requires a flat, dry, clean surface. Wall imperfections will show through the stone. Sanded plaster, hardener, suitable primer: the fundamentals of an installation that lasts thirty years.

4-star hotel, reception lobby
Back-counter wall in Classic veneer, decor with pronounced vein (Rainforest Green), 2400 × 1200mm format with photo-matching. On the ceiling, acoustic panels in light stone: the image continues from one plane to another, and the hall's reverberation drops a notch.
